What Are GS1 Trade Item Dimensions and how to manage in SyncForce?
GS1 Trade Item Dimensions describe the external physical dimensions of a trade item in a standardised way.
Within SyncForce, Trade Items are managed as SKU-level configurations:
- Individual Sales Unit (ISU)
- Grouped Sales Unit (GSU)
- Transport Sales Unit (TSU)
These correspond to the different levels at which products are commercially identified and exchanged, comparable to GS1 hierarchy levels such as Each, Inner Pack, Case, Display and Pallet.
SyncForce only manages predefined SKU configurations. A full pallet can therefore be a TSU when it is a fixed, preconfigured Trade Item. Shipment-specific pallet configurations or transport loads are outside this model.

ISU, GSU and TSU are Trade Items
This is important because Product Dimensions and Trade Item Dimensions serve different purposes.
Product dimensions describe the physical product itself. Trade Item Dimensions describe the complete commercial configuration, including its packaging.
Example: Football Sold Without a Box
A football is essentially spherical, so its most meaningful product dimension is:
Diameter = 220 mm
If the football is sold without a box and the barcode label is applied directly to the ball, the football itself is the Individual Sales Unit and therefore the Trade Item.
The smallest rectangular box that can completely enclose the football measures:
220 × 220 × 220 mm
Its GS1 Trade Item Dimensions are therefore:

The diameter remains the product characteristic.
The Height, Width and Depth describe the Trade Item.
Example: The Same Football Sold in a Box
Now place the same football in a retail carton measuring 230 × 230 × 230 mm.
The product itself has not changed:
Football diameter = 220 mm
But the Individual Sales Unit is now:
Football + Retail Carton
The Trade Item Dimensions therefore become:

The Smallest Box Around the Trade Item
A useful way to understand GS1 Trade Item Dimensions is to imagine the smallest rectangular box that completely fits around the Trade Item.
That bounding box must include:
- the product;
- its packaging;
- relevant protrusions such as caps, handles or lids;
- any items permanently attached to the Trade Item.
The resulting dimensions are then assigned according to the applicable GS1 orientation rules.
Consumer Trade Items
For consumer-facing Trade Items, GS1 determines the default front first.
When facing that default front:

This is why GS1 does not simply use the common product notation Length × Width × Height.
Non-Consumer Trade Items
For non-consumer Trade Items such as cases and predefined pallet Trade Items, the natural base is used.

For example, a case with a natural base of 400 × 300 mm and a height of 250 mm is recorded as:

Product Dimensions vs. Trade Item Dimensions
The distinction can be summarised as:
Product Dimensions describe the physical product.
GS1 Trade Item Dimensions describe the complete commercial Trade Item.
A product may therefore use dimensions such as Diameter, Length, Thickness or Screen Diagonal, while the Trade Item containing that product is always represented using the GS1 dimensional model of Height, Width and Depth.
